La Muñecas: Alexandra Oui Desir... a.k.a.Chica The first day at Norland Middle school I sat next to this crazy girl in my Art class.. She taught me that Colombians don't speak Colombian but instead spanish just like Haitians speak Creole. With a few amazing girls we were part of a group called Hot Devils ;) Chica and me also ended up taking Fashion at Design and Architecture Senior High .. Alexandria had the best catwalk and can dance even taught this white girl how to do the Tootsie Roll .. Chica had sass, but yet was humble unlike other people we knew.. She was always was a great friend to me even if we didn't spend every lunch together. Miss her so much and I hope to visit her in NYC and have a crazy adventure with my Chica.. Love You Chica hope you still like the color Yellow.. <3 <3

Continuing my digital doll series with my cousin Thatiana Taborda. She is a smart and beautiful teenage girl that I have seen grown up before my eyes. When I was young she would come over my house and started to draw on the floor on a big piece of newsprint. As a little toddler she looked so adorable that I decided to draw her. When I was done I gave her the drawing she put it up in her room and I thought that was sweet. Next year, she will be fifteen and and she will be having her quince's party; I'm really looking forward to what this young lady will become in the future and I hope she knows how much I care about her and how proud to be her cousin. Love you Tati!

Last Month I attended the SCBWI Mid-year workshop at Walt Disney Coronado Resort. Had a fantastic time I was able to meet many wonderful Illustrators and Authors that are passionate about children's books! Made sure to take the Digital Workshop Track in which four speakers discussed the process of making picture book apps and e-Books. After the workshops Lucy Cummins was one of the awesome Art Directors critiquing my portfolio. She suggested I start a Daily sketch project on my blog which is one of her many excellent Ideas! Had a wonderful time cant wait to go to my next conference!!

This week topic on Illustration Friday is launch and the first thing to came to my mind is launching a kite from the top of a mountain.. My cousin Felipe and I use to make kites with craft paper, sticks, and strings sometimes the strings would snap and they would fly away from us.

As a little girl I always felt like I had a someone watching over me, especially the days I would wonder through the forest close to my grandfather's farm alone. Sometimes in this forest I would see things that I couldn't really explain, observe blinking lights, hear weird sounds and see figures manifesting themselves. Maybe those were spirits of Ancestors lurking past generations that lived in the farm.

Cuando era pequeña siempre me sentí como si hubiera alguien cuidando de me, especialmente cuando me gustaría ir a el bosque cercano a la finca de el abuelo sola. A veces, en este bosque vera cosas querealmente no me podía explicar, observar las luces parpadeantes, escuchar sonidos extraños y vera figuras que se manifiestan. Tal vez esos eran los espíritus de los antepasados que vivieron en la finca.

Life has really been a really intense last couple of months of 2010, it defiantly felt like my world came crashing down. Towards the end of November I decided to moved out of my family’s house due domestic problems. It was time to move away from a bad situation something I should of done much sooner.. Extremely lucky to have very incredible boyfriend Jonathan who is helping me in every way he can. Jonathan cheers me up whenever I think negative and can stand me when I am grumpy or stressed, We just celebrated our 2nd Anniversary and I took Jon to see the Cirque de Soliel show Kooza which is in town. Last weekend I bought my first car which made me into a Nervous wreck I been needing to do for a while it was a 2011 Nissan Versa in a electric blue this a step for the many things I need to continue pursuing. New Art work will be posted soon working on a couple illustrations including a redesign of my identity and website. Wishing everyone alot of new and exciting Adventures for 2011!

Lately I have been incredibly busy and defiantly this has amazing week for me. In addition to all the great new I was featured this week on two great blogs. On Monday my Rock the Vote illustration was a companion to an article on Escape from Illustration Island, by Thomas James has a fantastic podcast every illustrator should tuned into. La Madremonte - Providence, RI

So I became an official Finalist for The Pride of Our Heritage: Mural Design Contest sponsored by Verizon Wireless. In honor of Hispanic Heritage month seven designs from seven different artist will be selected and transformed into murals throughout local communities! My submission was la Madremonte illustration, it's my interpretation of the Colombian legend its a piece of my heritage. The winning design will made into a public mural; the artist $500 gift certificate to an art supply store and possible inclusion in a one page advertisement in a national art publication.Special thanks to my friend Christian Castro for giving me a heads up for the during the submission. Done in both of Photoshop and Illustrator this was inspired by a couple of stories of Mermaids from Barranquilla a coastal town of Colombia. In the summer I had the pleasure of visting this colorful town that is know for his Carnivals in February. This piece was shown last week "Weekend Art Show" in Miami Lakes, made some new friends got some great advice from local artist and sold three pieces Yay!

A couple teachers at the show have informed me that many public elementary and middle schools have cut Art, Music, & P.E. from there curriculum.. So tragic to think so many young kids won't be able to discover their talent. Just reminded me of a talk I saw on TED by Sir Kent Robinson about schools kill creativity. I couldn't imagine sitting in grade school with out painting and going out side for recess. Looking forward to my Art teacher everyday since kindergarden has made me who I am today.. Unfortunately many kids will be lost in a broken system if we dont take action..

En verano tuve el placer de visitar este linda ciudad que es conocido por sus carnavales en febrero. Esta pieza se exibo la semana pasada "Weekend Art Show" en Miami Lakes, hecho nuevos amigos, recibir algunos consejos de artistas locales y vende tres piezas Yay!

Un par de profesores en la exposición me han informado que muchas escuelas públicas de primaria y secundaria en Miami han cortadon Arte, Música, y Fisca de su currículum .. Trágico para muchos niños a que no puedenan descubrir su talento. Sólo me recordó una charla que vi en TED por Sir Kent Robinson acerca de las escuelas matan la creatividad. No me podía imaginar estar en la escuela primaria sin poder pintar o salir a jugar futbol. Desafortunadamente muchos niños se perderán en un sistema que no funciona.

This weeks Illustration Friday is Immovable, I have decided to illustrate one of my favorite childhood bedtime stories La Madremonte (or Mother Earth).. My Grandfather would tell me never to go out to the mountain alone because la madremonte will kidnap me and I will never see my family again.. Its one of many different Colombian legends that exist to scare little children but I believe they are also were there to protect them.. I remember in the 80s Colombia was a very violent and dangerous during the Guerrilla Warfare by the F.A.R.C., E.L.N. and other military insurgent groups. Pretty sure that my grandfather wanted me to stay put and not wonder off into the vast mountain to be lost forever..

Esta semana el tema en Illustration Friday es inamovible, ilustrado uno de mis cuentos favoritos de la infancia La Madremonte.. Mi abuelo me decía que nunca debo ir a la montaña sola, porque la Madremonte me secuestran y nunca volver a mi familia otra vez .. Es una de muchas de las leyendas colombianas que existen para asustar a los niños pero creo que también estaban allí para protegerlos. Recuerdo que en los años 80 Colombia fue muy violento y peligroso durante la guerra de guerrillas de las FARC, el ELN y otros grupos insurgentes. Mi abuelo quería que me quedara quieta.

QR Codes is a matrix code that directs you straight to a url like my website. By downloading a QR reader on your smartphone or your computer you can scan codes found in business cards, magazine, signs and other places. I became interested in these QR codes after seeing codes in Esquire December 2009 "the augmented reality issue", It blew me away to see how codes can direct you to animation and video abot the editorial spreads. I am very interested to see the evolution of how users interact with content in the future.

Hola! The Department of Solid Waste Management and Tv-Department of Miami-Dade County have asked me to illustrate a recycling machine. This machine is part of a cinema spot that encourages children to recycle more for a greener future. Animated with the help of motion designer Robert Molina the Tv-Department also shoot footage of 3 talented child actors from Hammocks Middle school to integrate into the spot. The animation and the child actors will be making there big scene debut on memorial day weekend in all of Miami's movie theaters. Soon I will post the final spot in addition to a long overdue motion reel. Take Care

Hola! El Departamento de Manejo de Residuos Sólidos y Tv-Departamento de Miami-Dade me han hecho ilustrar una máquina de reciclaje. Esta máquina es parte de un spot de cine que anima a los niños a reciclar para un futuro verde. Animado con la ayuda del movimiento diseñador Roberto Molina del Departamento de Tv también filman pequeños actores con talento de escuela intermedia Hammock Middle. Currently I'm a freelance designer in Miami. Many things are in the process of changing in my life and I am finally working on what matters most children's books. Im extremely interested in making bilingual books about Colombian folkloric stories, its what I wish I had growing up here in U.S.

Below are thumbnails for The forbidden room of the Osorio Brothers a story that i'm revisiting from children's book class taught by Thomas Casmer. Wrote it in honor of two fantastic painters from my moms home town of Abejjoral.They were truly mysterious characters who never had formal art training but did very impressive works of art.

The Summer im heading back to Colombia for a month to travel all over the country to collect more stories and to meet as many family members that are never had the chance to meet..

Actualmente soy una diseñadora, trabajando en lo que me importa los libros de niños. Estoy muy interesada en hacer libros bilingües sobre las historias tradicionales Colombianas. De nina no tenia este tipo de libros bilingües aqui en EE.UU.

A continuación tengo imágenes en miniatura para mi libro El Cuarto Prohibido de los Hermanos Osorio una historia que escribe en la classe de libro para niños en la Universidad. Escribe este cuento en honor de dos pintores fantásticos del puelbo de mi madre Abejoral. Verdaderamente misteriosos, que nunca habían tomado classes formales de arte, pero que fureon muy buenos pintores.

Este verano voy a regresar a Colombia por un mes, para viajar por todo el país y para collectar más historias. También a conocer a tantos familiares que nunca tuve la oportunidad de conocer.

Greetings Everyone!! Its really beginning to pick up for me this year, The Alice and Wonderland show coming up really soon! Last month moved to the Graphic Department of Miami-Dade County where I am surrounded by great designers and getting more Changenging assignments. Also where I produced this map for the Department of Solid Waste Management.. I illustrated all of the facilitates and vehicles they use to cycle the trash and recyclables in Miami-Dade. Lately I have re-sparked my fascination with space, after seeing the Discovery STS-128 Launch on my birthday weekend (Thanks to my boyfriend Jonathan Diaz for taking me!). This piece was done in corel painter, just trying to get the hang of the program after not using it for a while. The boy in this doodle is my younger brother Alexander, he just started his first year in college studying Anthropology at FAU, he has been talking about monkeys alot lately, so decided to place a monkey on his head. I have no clue if he is interested in becoming an anthropologist in space one day but it could be exciting research.

By the way its his birthday this week so Happy Birthday Alexander!!

Grandfathers Farm

Greetings its been a while since I have posted, been busy girl. Last month I flew to Colombia with my boyfriend Jonathan, on a well deserve vacation. Thinking about it so much lately, this Illustration is a memory of what my grandfathers farm was like, I basically went and spent each summer since I was a kid. Unfortunately my mother had to sell it because she was scared she couldn't afford it any more. One day I hope to have a place to call home in Colombia.

When I got back Jon helped me get a job for Miami-Dade County as an Illustrator! Illustrating vectors , animating in flash, also creating story boards; a great job after school. I am really happy and grateful that I have a job, especially with this economy. And I hope that my friends that need work also get what they deserve soon.

My Internship with Richard Solomon

My Internship with Artitst Representative Richard Solomon in New York City

was incredible. Richard Solomon Is one of the top Artist Representatives in this country
representing 20 Award winning illustrators including Gary Kelly, Sterling
Hundley, C.F Payne and other great Illustrators. The Internship lasted three
weeks I stayed in the Eastside Village with my friend Anthony Tso Parents
who were extremely nice. At the internship my tasked included droping off
mail at the post office to picking up artwork from the Society of Illustrators.
Richard as an excellent team in the Office they are Krista, Meridith and Scott.
I had such a great time with them and learn so much about the business of
Illustration During the Internship I had the privilege of meeting my favorite
artist Marcos Chin thanks to Krista Fuentes !! Marcos Chin was nice enough
to go have lunch with me and give me a great portfolio review. Over all it was
an amzing experiance. I want to thank Nikki Lopez for helping me get the internship,
Also Anthony Tso and his family for letting me stay there house in Nj and
apartment in the East side Village Im in for ever in your debut. Of course
thank to Richard and the Office for having me its was loads of fun and I had
an amazing time!!

My story is about two mysterious painters Victor and Angel that are very talented that live in this small town in Colombia. They have a secret room that is off limits and two curios kids Lucia and Juan want to find out what is in this room!! The story comes from my mothers hometown of Abejorral where these infamous painters lived, they never had any training but they were still very talented. I intend to finish the book and get it published in Colombia.Im sure to illustrate and retell many stories from my family.
